The action of the play takes place in the Staff Room of the Greenfingers Palace Hotel in the Peak District.

This play was carefully devised and specially written as a test piece for amateur dramatic societies competing in the "News Chronicle" Drama Contest, 1937-38. Its single set, properties. costumes, are the simplest possible. It requires no elaborate effects. All it demands are sensible lively production and good acting. The author has put it into the form of a detective play - though it contains no murders and no police - for two reasons: firstly, because the general public likes this type of play; secondly because it is easier to produce and act a play with a certain obvious plot structure than it is to do a play of pure character. Nevertheless, this is really a comedy of character, masquerading as - and to some extent burlesquing - a mystery play. The producer should remember this, and should make his characters more authentic than the plot. (Notes from script)

The winners of the Contest, in January 1938, were the Bournemouth Little Theatre Club.

Twenty-five years ago, almost to the day, at a meeting in the Village Hall, there was inaugurated the Fairlight Drama Group, with the principal object of producing plays. About two years later the name of the Group was changed to the Fairlight Players. Two full scale productions have been mounted in almost every year since that modest but enthusiastic beginning and, in addition, a number of shorter performances have been given by invitation or for members only.

(From the notes on the rear of the programme)

This play marks a change in strategy as the Players abandoned the matinee performance on Saturday in favour of an additional evening performance on Thursday. This would become the regular pattern for a number of years.

At this stage, we have not identified any pictures from this production, although some may exist in our collection of mystery pictures. If you can help, please feel free to contact us.
